A Complete Guide to Egyptian Payment Methods

Accepting payments in Egypt is fundamentally different from Western markets. There is no single dominant payment method — instead, Egyptian consumers use a mix of cash, cards, mobile wallets, and newer options like Buy Now Pay Later. Merchants who offer only one or two payment options lose customers at checkout. This guide covers every major payment method in Egypt and how to integrate them effectively.

Card Payments via Paymob

Paymob is Egypt's leading online payment gateway, processing the majority of card-based e-commerce transactions. It supports Visa, Mastercard, and Meeza (Egypt's national card scheme), along with installment plans from major banks.

Key features for merchants:

  • Instant settlement options for faster cash flow
  • Installment plans from banks like CIB, QNB, and Banque Misr — customers pay in 6-36 monthly installments
  • Mobile wallet acceptance — Vodafone Cash, Orange Money, and Etisalat Cash can be accepted through the same integration
  • Fraud detection built into the gateway with 3D Secure support

Integration is straightforward via Paymob's API or iframe embed. Most e-commerce platforms, including Dukkan, offer native Paymob integration that can be activated with just your API keys.

Fawry: Over-the-Counter Payments

Fawry is Egypt's largest electronic payment network, with over 250,000 service points across the country — from pharmacies and supermarkets to mobile phone shops and post offices. It is uniquely Egyptian and has no real equivalent in Western markets.

How it works for e-commerce:

  • Customer selects Fawry at checkout and receives a reference number
  • Customer visits any Fawry service point within 24-48 hours and pays cash using the reference number
  • Payment is confirmed electronically, and the merchant is notified
  • Order ships after payment confirmation

Fawry is particularly popular with customers who are unbanked or distrust online payment forms. Approximately 5-8% of online transactions in Egypt use Fawry, and offering it can capture customers who would otherwise abandon their cart.

Mobile Wallets: Vodafone Cash, Orange Money, Etisalat Cash

Mobile wallets are the fastest-growing payment segment in Egypt, driven by Central Bank of Egypt initiatives to promote financial inclusion. Over 30 million mobile wallets are now active across the three major telecom operators.

  • Vodafone Cash — the market leader with the largest user base and widest merchant acceptance
  • Orange Money — growing rapidly with aggressive promotions and cashback offers
  • Etisalat Cash — smaller market share but strong among Etisalat subscribers

Payment is simple: the customer enters their mobile wallet PIN at checkout and confirms the payment via SMS. Funds are deducted from their wallet balance. For merchants, mobile wallet payments settle faster than COD and have zero chargeback risk.

Mobile wallets are especially popular for orders under 500 EGP, where the convenience factor outweighs any preference for COD.

Buy Now Pay Later: ValU and Sympl

Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) is rapidly gaining adoption in Egypt, particularly for higher-value purchases like electronics, furniture, and fashion. The two leading providers are:

  • ValU (by EFG Hermes) — offers 6, 12, 24, and 36-month installment plans with competitive interest rates. Strong brand recognition among middle and upper-middle class consumers.
  • Sympl — newer entrant offering interest-free installments for shorter terms. Growing quickly among younger shoppers.

BNPL typically increases average order value by 30-50% because customers can afford to buy more when payment is spread over months. For merchants, the key benefit is that you receive the full payment upfront — the BNPL provider takes on the credit risk.

BNPL is most effective for products priced above 1,000 EGP. Below that threshold, most customers prefer simpler payment methods.

Cash on Delivery (COD)

Despite the growth of digital payments, COD remains the most-used payment method in Egyptian e-commerce, accounting for approximately 55% of all transactions. For many Egyptian shoppers, especially first-time online buyers, COD is the only payment option they trust.

Why COD dominates:

  • Trust deficit — many consumers are wary of entering card details online
  • Unbanked population — approximately 35% of adult Egyptians do not have a bank account
  • Quality verification — customers want to inspect products before paying
  • Cultural habit — cash transactions are deeply embedded in Egyptian commerce

Merchants must treat COD as a first-class payment method, not a fallback. This means building COD-specific workflows for order verification, return handling, and cash reconciliation.

Choosing the Right Payment Mix for Your Store

The optimal payment mix depends on your product category, average order value, and target customer:

  • Fashion and accessories (AOV 200-500 EGP): COD 60%, Mobile Wallets 20%, Cards 15%, Fawry 5%
  • Electronics (AOV 2,000+ EGP): BNPL 35%, Cards 25%, COD 30%, Mobile Wallets 10%
  • Groceries and FMCG (AOV 150-300 EGP): COD 50%, Mobile Wallets 30%, Cards 15%, Fawry 5%
  • Furniture and home (AOV 3,000+ EGP): BNPL 40%, Cards 30%, COD 25%, Mobile Wallets 5%

The general rule: offer every payment method available and let customers choose. Each additional payment option can increase conversion rates by 5-15%.

Integration Checklist

Before launching your store, ensure you have:

  • Paymob account activated with card and wallet acceptance
  • Fawry merchant ID registered and tested
  • BNPL partnerships with ValU and/or Sympl (if selling high-value items)
  • COD workflow with order confirmation via WhatsApp/SMS
  • Payment method icons displayed prominently on product pages and checkout
  • Arabic payment instructions for each method (do not assume customers know how each works)
  • Reconciliation process for tracking payments across all channels

Platforms like Dukkan provide native integrations with all of these payment providers, so you can activate each method from your dashboard without writing any code.
